    transfer deadline day

looking forward to some mad, late deals tonight

this is definitely one night of the year when i remain glued to the computer screen

we've already seen radamel falcao agree a year long loan deal (a 4 year loan-to-buy deal, if you believe falcao's agent) to manchester united - that one was utterly unexpected and came out of nowhere

at the end of this last transfer window, it has been revealed that chelsea now have 26 players on loan at other clubs worldwide

    fair enough, you might say

all i'd add to that is to repeat the tale of merab jordania, the former owner of vitesse in the netherlands - last year, jordania claimed that pressure had been put on vitesse, who were sitting at the top of their domestic table, to dump the league, in order to not increase the value (and wage demands) of chelsea's on-loan players at the club

jordania insists the financial backing coming from the london club made it impossible to do otherwise and vitesse fell away towards the end of the season

i don't mean to highlight chelsea specifically - the point is that monied clubs, trying to get around the financial fair play rules, are investing so heavily in other clubs, by stocking them with loan players, that they have influence over these clubs that they should not have

it is a precedent that is very dangerous for soccer

    rant ends

    Germany STILL Champions...

Good that this was just a friendly and not the second one of a two-legged FIFA-Match with aggregate scores

One day they will scrap the away-goals rule. Not really relevant anymore. I hope Arsenal don't have an injury crisis in defence considering our lack of proven first-teamers there. Chambers does look a deal though.

Arsenal FC? No matter how many goals they let through, with him they are always on the winning side.

Maybe they will also rename their stadium sometime like the famed FC Bergheim

the argentina result against germany, whilst largely meaningless in a friendly match context, could also be taken as a sign that argentina either need to drop messi or stop thinking of him as their messiah and building the team around him

argentina looked good value without the spectre of a strolling messi

of course, it was probably the right result also - argentina were woefully unlucky during the recent final to see a perfectly warranted penalty for neuer's knee-to-face foul against higuain not given - a poor refereeing display to cap a world cup full of poor refereeing decisions, and a final that argentina should have won on correct decisions

there, that should shake things up a bit

I'm over Messi. Never really liked watching him play. Yes he's quick. Yes he's got the ball on a string attached to either foot. But I just don't like him. And there is no way he deserved that Player of the Tournament Trophy. Contrast that with Suarez - who I REALLY don't like but he's such a menace on the pitch that I always want to see what he'll do (as long as his teeth are sheathed). Germany used inexperienced players but Di Maria looked fantastic.
