I talked on the phone to an old friend who now lives in US - emigrated and settled there some years ago. The usual, jobs, home, kids...
The youngest (about 7 years old) came home from school last week distraught, terrified and in floods of tears. It took them some time to calm her down and get any sense out of her about what had happened. Apparently she had been convinced by some other kids that her parents, not being American born, were going to be kicked out of the country, the family broken up, etc. No wonder she was distressed. Where did the other kids get these ideas? From home, from the news, from social media? I don't know, but from the political campaigns that have been running for the past year. And her parents are legally in the US. She was born there. Similar events are reported in the UK, including the delightful post cards given to Polish kids to take home to their parents, advising them to leave and calling them "vermin". Careful choice of words, that. Same term used by the Nazis for the people they didn't like.

I was and am so angry. There is a reason for politeness, respect and dignity in public life. It protects us all from the undercurrents of hatred that exist. Over my lifetime, many of the more extreme terms and ideas have been squeezed out of the public domain and politicians have played a bit part. Some may call it political correctness, but using hateful, abusive and corrosive language is an offence to us all. As they said during WWII, loose talk costs lives. Literally in the case of Jo Cox, the English MP who was killed a few months ago, and metaphorically in the case of this little girl and all the other people who are living in fear for their safety, their protection and in some cases their lives. Politicians and campaigners have a responsibility that goes with their rights to free speech. Of course, they will brush it off and dismiss it as not part of their intention. Their intentions don't matter; they have a responsibility to be careful. And they haven't been and we will all suffer from the demons that have been unleashed and legitimised by these fucking idiots who are careless with what they say and how they say it. Firing up the base with incendiary language is not funny, it's not good politics and is a risk to us all. Damn them to hell. How long before we will hear the N word and others that we thought were banished?

My friends are now trying to figure out how to soothe their distressed daughter who gets hyper-anxious if either of them leaves the house. They wonder how to persuade her to go back to school, how she will relax and reclaim her childhood. This little seven year old will recover, probably. Will she forget this? I doubt it.

I like bargains and discounts as much as the next person, but there
is something a little sneerworthy about week-long Black Friday sales.

Considering that it's mostly a scam to begin with, a lot of it being cheap derivative products (TV's with features missing...etc)
and the fact that a large portion of the stuff you can get for much cheaper during the rest of the year is why I never go to these things...

...and I refuse to shop at a store that makes their employees work on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, so it's no sale from me.

I've just convection heated my microwave meal for 4 minutes. I was all proud with myself for getting it out of the microwave and to my chair without burning myself... It's heating up properly now.

I'm posting the account here so as to punish myself the next time I log in.

Does Black Friday have anything to do with Panthers?

shouldn't a comment like that be coming from Trump or one of his supporters?...followed by endless condemnations by the other side (whoever that may be on any given day)

Anybody with at least half a brain knows that the majority of Trump supporters are not racist. Mostly they're just desperate enough to support someone who really isn't going to do a damn thing to change their lives or make things better so they voted without fully thinking things through.

Knock it off with the "everyone thinks I'm prejudiced because I vote for Trump" crap. It's not very becoming of you or anyone else at all.
