Could it be a DNS issue..?

I remember having to finally switch over to Google's after the one for my IP (CenturyLink) wouldn't let me access porn-w and they didn't seem to care when I called to complain.

Do your demons, do they ever let you go..?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside..?
Is it someone that you know..?

I don't believe the problem is with his DNS servers. He gave me the IP addresses of the Comcast DNS servers he is using, and I took out every DNS address I had set in a system I have here and plugged his IPs in and had no problems getting on here so that rules out that actual DNS servers.

He sent me the results from running tracert to Broken and it times out at the end because it gets to our host but is trying to hit the wrong IP for this forum at that end.

When I saw that, it was a WTF moment for me because I have never seen that happen before where it gets to the correct overall destination in general but is not directed to the actual specific IP address destination.

I'm thinking of actually having him enter the name and IP address into his localhost file on his system because that will override any DNS misdirection.

Has he tried turning it off and then turning it back on again..? (That's exhausted my vast technical support knowledge)

Could he maybe edit the routing table and specify a route. Alternativly if the router has the ability, he could try changing the routing protocol (mine allows me to switch between fasted route and shortest path protocols and it seems to fix a lot of fiddly issues)

The other thought would be to delete the routing table, ARP table, DNS table, flush the DNS cache, douse it in bleach set fire to it and make the router and DNS server rebuild the whole thing from scratch.

Actually I did a tracert again from here on my system and when comparing mine to his, I realized I f'd up and missed something.

    Mine :

    His:

Someone 'splain to me how we hit the same final node at altushost itself and my trace completes to the forum and his times out. They only explanation I can think of from looking at the response times is that his ISP is getting it's ass kicked with traffic and is not seeing the response returned by our server before their wait time for the response times out. Does that make sense to anyone ??

    Something strange is going on.
I can access broken with no problem but when I ping that host directly I get no response.

The response times on his tracert are pretty slow in general which might support your idea that his ISP is having trouble dealing with traffic volume.
Maybe he could try going through a free VPN (vpnbook.com/freevpn) or try using TOR to see if scrambling the routing gets through.

Or edit the routing table to exclude nld-net-ip.as51430.net in case the server has trouble with connections through that node?

First, apologies on my part to everyone for going totally off topic and turning this into a temporary tech support thread. I hope to get it back on topic soon.

@arbiec, thank you so much for trying to help. It's extremely helpful to have someone else to bounce ideas around with who can offer possible solutions to weird problems like this.

Pinging a server will often result in no response from the server because the techs that support a company disable ping response in the firewall to reduce the effect of denial of service attacks. I do the same thing with customers we support.

I appreciate the VPN suggestion, I wasn't thinking of telling him to do that but that suggestion made me look at the tracert results I got versus his. I noticed that the number of hops in routing to get to the final node in my results was 12 while his number was 20 and the routing went through totally different nodes. Using VPN will route him in a different way and would bypass a possible problem node that his ISP routes through. We'll see what happens with that.

In Covid news, the doctor that was in charge of vaccine development that Trumpsterfire fired filed a formal whistleblower complaint today. In addition to filing the complaint, he actually made a statement via teleconference and basically used a virtual flamethrower to burn the entire administration to virtual ashes with his statement.

Not sure how much help I was, my front line technician days were way before this new fangled internet thing. I am still fairly competent on stuff 'in the building' but from the router outwards I just fumble until it works again!

On a CoVid note, I attended three live stream funerals today. A colleague then a former school freind and lastly a funeral for probably the nicest, most generous man I have ever known. In any other time, his funeral would have been attended by the whole town. Today it was his wife, three kids and his two siblings. I have two more to attend across this week.
This virus is evil and those that are dismissing it or thinking it is over are in for a bit shock.

    Stay safe everyone.
