    Just my anecdote, but I've had Norton and Mcafee paid av and got pwned with both, had to wipe the drive 3-4 times. I had one virus that actually popped up notifications laughing about my Norton av. "Your anti-virus is of no use." - that's what it said. Bastards.

    Since then I have free avast and no problems other than annoying false positives sometimes. Of course I'm wiser now and use noscript too.

    Norton used to be good many many years ago but has gone to crap. It was infamous for leaving loads of crap behind when uninstalled that often caused problems as well
    BTW, avast isn't blocking me any more again
