here's another puzzle to get your teeth into .....

this puzzle is loosely based on a game from 1878 where a similar situation occurred in a real life game, supposedly played at the café de la regence, paris

    here are the rules:

    1. it's white's move

    2. white must checkmate on the very next move

    3. the rules on pawn promotion are dictated by the laws of the time (specifically law 13, as if that helps ) ... "when a pawn has reached the eighth square, the player has the option of selecting a piece, whether such piece has previously been lost or not, whose names and powers it shall then assume, or of deciding that it shall remain a pawn"
"i know enough to know what's instantly forgettable"

    my guess:

[pawn turn into a knight, then move to A6?]

Do you mean checkmate in one move, or two.
No matter what you promote the pawn to become, the black king can capture it on the next move which leads to mate with the queen at D8 or B6.
Can't see any solution for mate in one though.

checkmate on the very next move, so that means there is only 1 move in this one .....

all the clues you need are there (be as literal/lateral as you like )

I have a feeling that the twist in this one is going to that white
is actually moving down the board, M. Night sp88amalan.

That yellow font is a good idea. Is it

    Rook to C8?

@ misrule, that would be a stalemate, but not checkmate

I'm stuck on this one. Unless there is some trick to the question or the board layout... The numbering suggests the board is the right way round, and white would be playing towards the top. Promotion of the pawn seems to be a red herring; whatever it is promoted to can be taken by the king.
    Hmmmm. I'm missing something here.
