    the trick with this puzzle is realizing that black can't castle to get out of trouble after q-a1 (as, i think, jesse did) - if it's white's move, black must have moved previously, and both of black's pawns are still on their starting squares .....

    Okay, I actually looked at it this time. The only move is Q-C6 = check. King must move but remain within row 8. It doesn't matter which way the king moves. Q-D7 ends it. Anything else would be three or more moves.

    Doesn't work.
    Queen to C6 Check
    King to F8
    Then queen to D7 isn't check or mate.
    If queen to A8 Check
    the king can escape to G7

    The only solution that works is if you assume that the king can't castle next move.
