    1 of them, however, is a fake - it looks exactly the same as the others but is slightly lighter in weight compared to the others, although not different enough that you are able to tell just by holding it in your hand

    I think so...

    3 versus 3 in the first weighing.
    If they are the same, the lighter one is one of the other two and just balance them to find out which.
    If one set of three is lighter - one versus one will reveal whether it is one of the two being weighed or the other one.
