It's the $ amount the government is legally allowed to borrow to keep going, now raised to 16.4 trillion.
Short term, to avoid voluntary destruction of our country, ANY reasonable lawmaker would apprise the situation and come to a compromise in time to avoid financial turbulence, then a market meltdown and the US being immediately downgraded credit-wise, which results in long-term harm to us due to paying more for everything; also just the interest rate raise on the debt (is) will be a 100 billion tax increase for all of us. We can't do that it'll break us but here we go.
Already we're right now living on ridiculous accounting wizardry, it's laughable.
In addition, because of long term inability to come to terms with our debt and budget we face an inevitable further credit downgrade which digs the hole deeper. Soon we must face austerity measures currently seen in Greece and Spain.
I feel for our kids, and won't blame them for cursing us when it's time to pay the piper. A responsible government would not have led us to this point.
If you are a citizen of the US, you owe over $52,000 just for this debt.
