robert downey jr with the key to the drinks cabinet ......?

in all seriousness, did the women's team recent successes hike the interest level for soccer in the u.s. much? - or at all?

i'm talking about the nation as a whole, not within the confines of frosty towers

Mostly because they complained about Trump and that's about it.

I really really hate to say it but they suffer twofold here, because it's women playing the sport AND it's soccer on top of that.

I don't think they even got a pay raise either.

No, that's Tony Stark (which fictionally is just as bad...just not in the MCU)

Over here, the womens game is growing slowly but steadily in stature.
The BBC televised the Womens community shield (first biggish trophy of the year) before the mens game this year and from what I hear, the viewing figures weren't that different for both matches.

I would like to see the Womens game steer clear of the pay channels like Sky and sign a free to air deal with the BBC or ITV for league matches, it would give it a chance to build the grass roots support a bit more.
The Womens world cup is a great example; I know a fair few people who started to watch because it was football and it was free on TV. Then they had picked a team to support, then they knew the names of key players and before long they were hooked.

I like to watch the womens games precisely because it is a different brand of football to the mens game. Maybe not quite as fast and physical but the extra time on the ball means that some of the passing and crossing is sublime. It is a bit more like watching a continental game than a Premier League scrap.

The USA Womens team is almost a combination of the two, they can play but they can also bring the physical side to the game as well - it's why they are head and shoulders the best

ah, there's your problem right there - it's soccer - the idea is to kick someone's arse, not hand it to them

diego armando maradona (1960-2020) died today of a heart attack at his buenos aires home - argentinian president alberto fernández announced 3 days of national mourning to mark the passing of the country's legend

love him or loathe him (and it's usually only the english who don't love him), maradona was 1 of the great names in soccer history - to many people, the greatest player to ever grace a pitch

I think it's both, really. Obviously the "Hand of God" goal irks the English, but they also voted his goal just a few minutes later as the "Goal of the Century."
