Years ago I stopped using Google and went with DuckDuckGo. Anonymous searches, and they don't track you. - thx 4 the recommendation Frosty btw.

However. Yes, there's always a however.

I searched this morning - on DuckDuckGo, some things about the VA for a friend.

A bit later, I went to youtube. youtube is owned by Google.

In my recommended vids on youtube, there were 2 about the VA.!!

How did this happen? Please tell me if you know.

it may be based on what other people viewing the same videos are
watching, rather than specifically tracking you.

For example, I don't log in to YT to watch videos and I don't save
my browser history/cookies. If I start m'browser and go watch a
video on a channel dedicated to restoring retro toys, then the
recommendations are all about restoring toys and/or vintage tools.

If I do the same thing on a channel that has done some restorations,
but has also done videos about being unhappy with the direction of
the recent star wars movies, then recommendations suddenly become
full of 'disney failing' conspiracies, 'women and diversity are ruining
XYZ', or 'incel intellectual destroys woman interviewer'.

It may be my google account watching me, a tracking cookie, or ads linked to the VA or who knows how many thousand ways we're being watched and stalked.
    It bugs me.
We're going to end up like the Chinese.
Boy I love the convenience entertainment and fun of this but at the same time there's always been the nagging worry that this won't turn out good for us.
I took a year off the internet not long ago and survived fine. Maybe I'll do it again.....

....but not until after Black Friday...and then there's Cyber Monday...Christmas deals...all the stuff I could dl and watch for free...all the things I love to watch...

    Shit.

A guy does a worldwide truck debut by easily breaking the supposedly bulletproof windows.

Everyone goes wild saying how great it is.

Probably more exposure and subsequent orders than if it had gone as expected...

I have signed up for email notification of any power outages affecting me, through the electric company here. A new free service.

    Do you see it yet?

...You're at your computer and the power goes out. Computer goes dead. Email is sent...
Or, you're at home and the power goes out. Your phone/tablet lights up with an email saying your power is out...

I'm thinking they did it as a joke.

I don't know: sounds a bit like two really useful comms at my work from recent years..

A manager sent an email to what he thought was the whole department, but added this to be sure 'If you didn't receive this email let me know and I'll add you to my list...'
Then we had a power outage that took the whole building complex down: they were good enough to post fault progress updates on the intranet so we could all keep abreast. On our PCs. Which were all powered by the same electricity...
