    PayPal terminates services to Mega

I'm going to post this here as it could be a site issue.
First I heard of it is today when my paypal said it couldn't make my payment.

    PayPal terminates services to Mega

Summary:PayPal has ceased processing customer payments for Mega, because it believes that Mega's encryption end-to-end model presents an 'insurmountable difficulty'.

    By Aimee Chanthadavong | March 2, 2015 -- 03:12 GMT (19:12 PST)

Cloud storage provider company Mega is on the hunt for an alternative payment processing service, after its relationship with PayPal fell through.

PayPal said it will no longer process Mega's customer payments, after concerns that Mega's "unique" encryption end-to-end model presents an "insurmountable difficulty". However, Mega highlights that its legal obligation as a cloud provider is much the same as any other US cloud storage services provider, including Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Dropbox, and yet PayPal does not appear to have the same concern.

"The encryption models claimed by various USA and other entities apparently do not represent any problem to PayPal or the parties behind PayPal," Mega said in a statement.

Mega said PayPal's concern first arose after a report published by NetNames claimed, incorrectly in Mega's view, that the business is not a legitimate cloud storage service. This eventually saw Visa and MasterCard terminating their payment services to the companies named in that report, and then putting pressure on PayPal to do the same.

Mega noted PayPal's "non-negotiable" decision to terminate its services to the company was after Mega had provided statistics and evidence to PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard to show the business is legitimate and legally compliant.

"PayPal has apologised for this situation, and confirmed that Mega management are upstanding and acting in good faith. PayPal acknowledged that the business is legitimate, but advised that a key concern was that Mega has a unique model with its end-to-end encryption which leads to 'unknowability of what is on the platform'," the company said.

The company added that it is currently in discussions with a number of alternative payment service providers, anticipating that these discussions will be concluded sometime in March.

Until then, as compensation for customers, Mega said it will temporarily not enforce its storage limits or suspend any accounts for non-payment, and has extended existing subscriptions by two months, free of charge.

The New Zealand-based company, which was founded by controversial internet figure Kim Dotcom, was launched in January 2013 and claims to now have more than 15 million registered customers in more than 200 countries.

Dotcom resigned as a director of the company eight months after launching the company to focus on his defence against extradition by the FBI and pursue his political ambitions.

I've got an extra month stashed of service stashed (I bought one from a reseller when MEGA first opened to have a little room to work with)
and if they are giving 2 free months...that gives me 3 months time to work with.
If their new payment options are too shady, I'm just going to let it all die and probably just buy premium from 1fichier.
I could probably keep my Doctor Who TV uploads in a free account,
but if payment options are getting scarce, that's not much more than a short term option at best.

The rest is just stuff and is relatively easily to re-upload somewhere else,
after deciding what I want to re-upload and deciding what not to bother with.
Of course my uploading is a drop in the bucket compared to yours, so I can't even imagine what you are feeling right now.

it is bizarre how long they (lobbyists?) are sustaining a hard-on
for mega, given how many other hosts there are out there. Maybe
    someone is taking it personally.

I got the same, it was worth a sarcastic chuckle. kind of reminds of certain governments where interest groups put pressure on others to get decisions pushed in their favor.

Well, as of now...I'm not really sure how much I want to upload to it if it's gonna possibly be dead in a few months anyway.
They added the 2 free months to my account already and I have another €9.99 in reserve of that,
but if I'm going to have to end up using Bitcoin or something seedy like that, I'm probably just going to end up shitcanning everything under the 50MB free account limit,
and starting from scratch for the umpteenth time.

My Who TV stuff should squeak under the limit but that's only a temporary solution if their money options get cut down or off.

I got an email from MEGA yesterday.

    PayPal Payment Cancellation
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (redacted email address)

Recently PayPal closed our account under pressure from Visa, MasterCard and the Motion Picture Association of America. Our blog post provides full details.
Unfortunately PayPal has emailed many users to say that the subscription has been cancelled, or wasn't processed correctly. We have asked PayPal to stop contacting our users but we suggest that you log into your PayPal account and cancel any MEGA subscription record.

    1. Log in to your PayPal account.
    2. Click Profile near the top of the page.
    3. Click My money.
    4. Click MEGA in the My preapproved payments section.
    5. Click Cancel or Cancel automatic billing and follow the instructions.

    Currently you can pay via:
    1. Google Wallet in the Android App [Top left menu: My account | Upgrade now!]
    2. Apple Pay in the iOS app [Settings | Upgrade Account!]
    3. By purchasing a voucher from our resellers.
Several new payment methods are being implemented. We will notify you when they are available.

In the meantime, we added 2 free months to the expiry date of every paid subscription that existed at 26 February 2015 so your account will not be affected by any non-payment while we change our payment service providers.

We appreciate your support and look forward to an ongoing relationship.

    Team MEGA

So it appears for now I can use the Google Wallet on the Android phone I don't have or Apple Pay on the iphone I don't have either,
or I could give my credit card number to a reseller to pay for my premium (I can't see anything possibly going wrong with that. )

    I made the switch today.
1fichier was running a special and a year's premium was 10 Euros and I couldn't pass that price up.
That being said, that means I'll have enough free space on MEGA for my Doctor Who TV stuff and everything else will have to be deleted.
My 2 free months MEGA gave me will expire on the 13th of May and I have another month in my account, so it should be good until June
unless they screw me out of that extra month for some reason, so if you want something of mine on Mega, get it soon.

I'm probably just going to dump my porn and just start with newer sets from here on out (I HATE re-uploading)
Any TV that's not Doctor Who or isn't stuff on another host (like my Gotham thread) is just going in the trash.
I'm mostly going to concentrate on my comics and even that isn't going to be fully re-upped.
The smaller threads will be fine but I'm not re-uploading 2 years of digital comics and Batman stuff..etc.
It's too much work for too little gain.

Also I'm done with the ncrypt/jdownloader stuff.
I'm just going to post regular links for here and my other forum Castaways.
I'm tired of explaining to older posters how they can access my links and then they just go get them elsewhere.
If the links/account dies down the road...oh, well.
