To those who served before me,
To those who served with me,
    And to those serving today.

It was an honor and a privilege to be in your company.
Thank you and God bless you.

100 years. I believe they call that a century. More years than most of us will call a lifetime. Hopefully as a species we are smart enough not to do that again. Veterans thank you for your service.

    Lest We Forget

The Armistice was declared 100 years ago today and ended the First World war.

Billed as "the war to end all wars", it ground on for four years, cost the lives of millions of soldiers and many civilians. May they rest in peace.

My grandfather volunteered and was sent to the front in France. He fought, got promoted, was gassed, did some heroic things and got decorated, was injured at least three times and, finally, lost a limb at the Battle of the Somme. He recovered fairly well and went on to live to old age. He was always proud to have served; content that he did his duty; and contemptuous of the war as a complete waste.
The war to end all wars it certainly wasn't.
