I find myself in the rare position of having a team in the MLB postseason.

I'm pretty sure my Astros won't make it past the Kansas City Royals but the important thing is that they had to knock the Yankees off to get there,
so no matter who wins this year, it won't be the Dallas Cowboys of Major League Baseball.

quick question from a brit that doesn't know much about this sport, but was trying to watch some of it today .....

so, when you have the guys running around the diamond, you're allowed to have more than 1 on an individual base? - can 1 guy even overtake another if the first guy doesn't feel like trying a steal or somesuch?

No, one guy on a base at a time.

okay, so now i'm confused - that's what i thought would be the case, but a game i was watching yesterday had what looked like 2 guys standing together on 3rd

is the batting team maybe allowed to have someone standing on the field as a coach/advisor?

That would be the 3rd base coach. (There's also one on 1st base as well.)

    This link should explain it.

    Code:
    http://m.mlb.com/glossary/positions/third-base-coach
Also click on positions and it will give you a greater listing of positions and hopefully explain it a little better to you.

ah, that would probably explain why the 2nd guy looked a little fatter and not as keen to try and steal home as the 1st guy then

The 3rd base coach also gives coded hand signals to the hitter, to swing or take the pitch etc. while the other team tries to decode and therefore steal the signals.

If the hitting team has a runner on 2nd, they try to see and steal the signs from catcher to pitcher, to see what pitch the batter will get. Teams also use bullpen players, or may have a spy in the center field stands with binoculars and a radio or cellphone to try to steal signals. Base coaches and catchers disguise the signals by giving false ones to cover the real one.

Baseball is a game filled with intrigue, yet still puts me to sleep in 10 minutes.

It's clearly number #3 in my 3 favorite sports and I'll usually only watch if my Astros are playing, or if the Yankees might get a foot broke off in their ass by any other team.
The postseason is not a lock for me to watch either. If I don't care about the teams, I'm not going to watch.

Yet it's still more fun than soccer. (yeah, I said it)
