The key axiom is that there is supreme being (the details vary widely) and all religion is then based on that. For an outsider who does not accept the axiom (atheists like me), proof and disproof are not possible. Conversation can even become difficult.
Even when accepting Christian axioms, I still don't think it's possible to turn their concept of God into something that is internally consistent. Too much complexity and too much contradiction.

"Axioms" in geometry and mathematics are self evident outside of their fields and can be tested independently.

    Just sayin'.

Thanks again for your contributions and viewpoints. I hope to bring more conversation soon.

Edit: BTW - Most Christians insist that "god is good". When confronted with a question like "why does god allow suffering?" They defer to either "freewill" or "we can't understand god's plan". I find both arguments irrational.

How did a lifelong Atheist like myself miss seeing this thread up to now?? Too busy committing unconscionable acts without fear of retribution from a higher power, I guess.

I remember being much younger and having to got to the hospital. One of the questions I was asked prior to admission was my religious affiliation. I straightforwardly said Atheist, to which the person asking the question replied, "Really?" Oh, the social stigma. I would like the oppurtunity to reply in kind to a person who informed me they were a Christian, but I like the take the high road when it comes to religious types. Let them be the petty ones...they are so good at it.

Finally, my belief as to why most people choose religion...fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of being wrong. Whatever. I've got better things to worry about while I'm alive...real things.

Marcus : "We'll have to stop Feeding Christians to the Lions, Brutus."

    Brutus : "Why?"

Marcus : "They're starting to say Grace before meals."

I don't know why I like that, I just do. It used to be a cartoon I had pinned to my bedroom door.
