about a month or so before xmas I couldn't mow m'lawn because
there had been so much late-spring/early summer rain that the
ground was water-logged and the mower couldn't get any traction.

Now, a month or so after xmas I can't mow m'lawn because there
is no lawn. Lack of rain + high temps = crunchy stubble instead of
    grass.

    Let's see,

Christmas is late spring/early summer, a month after Xmas you face grass-killing temps...

= you live in the Southern Hemisphere.

Our moanings about weather must seem all backwards to you. You live in a world where everything goes down the drain the wrong way.

You get to see the Large and Small Magellanic clouds! The Carina Nebula! Alpha Centauri!

    rodneys

it's about a month until my brother's birthday, which always reminds me
that I have four weeks to agonise over what a rodney I am at choosing
presents. Sadly, it also reminds me that we lost Jag around this time and
what an enlivening wit he was.

So here's to friends who are gone, but not forgotten.

this february 14th (saint valentine's day), i'm wondering how many of you have the practice in your own countries of kids sending anonymous romantic cards to people they associate with

when i was a kid, we used to do this at school - it was a thing to distribute a handful of handmade cards to class friends, probably more as an arts and crafts exercise than anything else - the cards weren't sexual, just an expression of fondness, covered in hearts and kisses

for those of you that still have this practice going on, do you think of it as playful and harmless, or is there something a little bit sinister about it?

are you implying there is some shadow-shrouded secret cabal of
    stationery suppliers pulling the strings?

When I was a teenager, the idea was to send a card anonymously to someone you fancied. They would try to figure out who it was...
It was fun, scary, exciting, etc. There wasn't that much of it about; not everyone sent cards and not to one's spouse/partner/girl or boy friend. It was a nice custom.

It does seem to have gotten a bit out of hand since I was a kid.
