Go, New Mexico!
Wow! That's some achievement.
Figures were published recently for teenage pregnancies in Ireland and the worst region had a rate of 9 per 1000. New Mexico had 93 per 1000! Thank you, New Mexico for making us look really good.![]()
New Mexico is a poor, mostly desert state with a history of corruption that was so bad at first no one really knows who owns a good percentage of it because of the double-dealing back then. More recent history suggests it hasn't gotten much better. A guy I worked for as a teenager went on to become mayor before involvement in a huge kickback scheme that he barely avoided prison for. see here
If not for oil and gas revenue plus $ from government and military bases we'd be a couple towns along the Rio Grande.
We should do better, being at the top of all the bad stats is shameful, and 10 times the teen pregnancy rate of the worst in Ireland as misrule says is ridiculous.
It's a poverty and cultural thing plus corruption and incompetence. I wish I knew the answer to make it better.
On the plus side it's a hauntingly beautiful place with amazing desert landscape, plus awesome mountains (1 right on the edge of town); lots of great people, and it's my home.
There is always hope![]()
You've got the worlds first commercial spaceport, so it's not all bad.![]()

Another category we win last place in.
A group of about 20 protesters crashed a Legislative Finance Committee meeting Thursday morning, carrying balloons and a giant “thank you” card for Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming, which they said was from the people of Mississippi.
The protesters – who didn’t identify themselves with a particular group but who almost certainly weren’t actually from Mississippi – walked in while the LFC was hearing testimony from Stanford University education researcher Eric Hanushek. Holding a “Mississippi” sign meant to make the group look like a political delegation, the group “thanked” Smith for New Mexico’s fall to a last-place ranking in child welfare. The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s “Kids Count” report, released last month, ranked New Mexico in last place, replacing perennial cellar-dweller Mississippi.
In other news, the US has slipped to 2nd place behind Mexico for the most obese country. The good news is, we won't have to build that wall so high now.![]()

Nob Hill is a neighborhood in Albuquerque. I live in this neighborhood.
By the size of the neighborhood this can't be more than about a quarter mile from my house.
Egad.
We're on the lookout, and if spotted we'll yell "MFD! MFD!" at her.

We're No. 1 on jobs that are dependent on Federal money.
Dead last in private sector jobs.
We're so screwed
